“During the week, I laughed, I cried, I cheered — and I was truly happy.”

🌟 Luna’s RYLA Journey: A Week of Leadership, Growth & Connection

📍 A Special Connection to Our Club

From July 27 to August 1, Luna attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), proudly sponsored by the Denver Metro South Rotary Club.

Luna’s RYLA experience was extra special — she is the daughter of Sandy, a Rotary exchange student from Nantes, France, who stayed with our member Rich and his family 25 years ago. This summer, Luna visited Colorado, and Rich encouraged her to join RYLA to experience leadership, teamwork, and personal growth.

On August 5, Luna presented her RYLA experience at our club meeting and moved everyone with her heartfelt reflections.

💡 What is RYLA?

RYLA — Rotary Youth Leadership Awards — is more than just a camp. It’s a week-long, life-changing experience designed to empower young leaders through team-building, mentorship, and personal development.

At the YMCA of the Rockies, over 100 participants, ages 14 to 17, came together not knowing what to expect. By the end of the week, they left with new friendships, stronger leadership skills, and memories to last a lifetime.

“RYLA is like a dream… It’s impossible to forget the people, the lessons, and the experiences.”
Luna

🏕️ Luna’s RYLA Highlights

Explored personal leadership styles through workshops and reflections

🎨 Creativity & Fun

Took part in the newspaper fashion show — a hilarious and empowering activity that encouraged confidence and self-expression

🌄 Outdoor Adventures

Played volleyball and other team sports

Joined a 5:00 a.m. yoga session to start the day with energy and focus

💬 The RYLA Effect

Luna shared a touching story about a fellow camper named Greg. At the start of the week, Greg was shy and quiet, rarely speaking to anyone. But by the end, thanks to the supportive environment, he opened up and formed meaningful connections.

“That,” Luna said, “is the RYLA effect.”

RYLA creates a safe space where young leaders connect beyond differences — learning to embrace new cultures, perspectives, and ideas.

🙌 A Heartfelt Thank You

Luna expressed her deep gratitude to the Denver Metro South Rotary Club for making this experience possible:

“I’m so thankful for this opportunity. I’ve grown, I’ve learned, and I’ve made memories I’ll carry forever.”

Our club is proud to support young leaders like Luna, helping them gain the tools and confidence to make a difference — in their communities and around the world.
